Why the same area can cost twice as much
The biggest single difference is where and how it's done. A small area under local anaesthetic in a day clinic, often with a vaser or similar device, starts at €2,200 to €2,500. The same area in a private hospital with a general anaesthetic and an anaesthetist in the room is about €4,400 to €4,500, because the hospital fee and the anaesthetist are part of the price.
After that it's the number of areas and how much fat comes out. Most clinics price by area, so stomach and love handles together cost less than two separate operations but more than one. Big combinations, such as stomach, flanks and back (often sold as "360"), sit at the top of the range.
What a fair quote includes
- the surgeon's fee and the theatre or hospital fee
- the anaesthetic, and the anaesthetist if you have a general anaesthetic
- your compression garment, which you wear for several weeks
- every follow-up visit, including a check in the first week or two
- what happens, and what it costs, if you need a touch-up
Ask for the quote in writing with all of that listed. A consultation costs €195 to €300 where it's charged; some clinics offer the first one free, sometimes by video.
Prices outside Dublin
Prices in Cork, Galway, Limerick, Kilkenny and Kerry sit inside the same range as Dublin. The surgeon and the setting move the price far more than the county does. What changes outside Dublin is travel: the number of trips for the consultation, the surgery and the check-ups, and who drives you home. Each county page works that out for where you live.
Paying for it
You pay for cosmetic liposuction yourself. Irish health insurance plans normally exclude cosmetic surgery, apart from correcting disfigurement caused by a congenital condition, an accident or disease. Check your own policy before you assume either way.
Revenue does not give tax relief on cosmetic surgery. Relief may be possible where surgery corrects a health issue, at the standard rate of 20%, so keep your receipts and ask your surgeon whether yours could count.
Some clinics offer monthly payment plans through a finance company. Treat that like any other loan: read the APR and the total you repay, and never sign on the day of your consultation.
Ireland or abroad
Liposuction in Turkey is advertised for less, roughly €1,300 to €5,200 in package prices, before flights, extra hotel nights and the time off. The real comparison includes the follow-up: who checks the wounds at home, and what happens if you need more treatment. Read liposuction in Turkey or Ireland before you book either.
Questions people ask
What is the lowest-cost way to have liposuction in Ireland?
One small area under local anaesthetic in a day clinic, from about €2,200 to €2,500. Whether that suits you depends on the area and how much fat there is, which only a surgeon can judge.
Is the consultation free?
Some clinics offer a free first consultation, often by video. Others charge €195 to €300, sometimes taken off the price if you go ahead.
Can I claim tax back on liposuction?
Revenue does not give tax relief on cosmetic surgery. Relief may be possible where surgery corrects a health issue, at the standard rate of 20%, so keep your receipts and ask your surgeon whether yours could count.
Does health insurance cover liposuction?
Irish health insurance plans normally exclude cosmetic surgery, apart from correcting disfigurement caused by a congenital condition, an accident or disease. Check your own policy before you assume either way.
Why do some clinics only show a 'from' price?
Because the final price depends on the areas, the amount of fat, the anaesthetic and the setting. A surgeon sets it after examining you. Ask for the full price in writing before you pay a deposit.
